(CNN) — The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Washington Capitals ahead Evgeny Kuznetsov for testing positive for cocaine.
The drug is banned under the World Anti-Doping Code.
Recently, the IIHF advised me that, because of a positive test for a prohibited substance, I would be suspended from international competition for four decades, Kuznetsov said in a declaration. Ive made the decision to accept this penalty. Representing my country has been really close to something and my own heart that I take much pride in. Not being able to put that sweater for four years is quite hard to take.
Kuznetsov is going to likely be ineligible for four years, together with his suspension. He was suspended on June 13.
We are aware of the positive test result and associated global sanction thats been imposed on Evgeny Kuznetsov, the Washington Capitals said in a declaration. We are disappointed with this development and take this occurrence seriously.
In addition, we are committed to ensuring that he has the necessary support needed to work through this situation.
Cocaine is not considered a performance-enhancing medication in the NHL and isnt illegal under the Performance Enhancing Substances Program of the NHL.
We know that Mr. Kuznetsov has voluntarily sought help through the education and counselling program provided for at the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement, and it has agreed to some normal testing protocol regarding his participation with that application, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
Daly states that no decisions are made on whether any additional actions are required, and that Kuznetsov has consented to a meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
I have disappointed so many people that are important for me, like my family, teammates and friends, Kuznetsov said. From the very first day that I took the ice in D.C., the Washington Capitals company and our supporters have been nothing but great for me and my family. I feel absolutely terrible for letting you down. I realize that the only way I can win back you is to take possession of my situation and my actions from this point forward.
