Khabib Nurmagomedov returns to the octagon, eleven months since he conquered Conor McGregor in possibly the UFC bout of time.
The UFC winner defends his title.
But has the Russian busy his period since that struggle in October 2018 ended in a brawl that landed those involved bans and penalties?
BBC Sport takes a look at the past year in the life of the undefeated champion.
It was the conversation that spilled over into a brawl that is post-bout.
Nurmagomedov forced McGregor to tap out in the fourth round before jumping the octagon fence and fighting with his competitor’s team.
He apologised after the episode but mentioned pre-fight comments in which McGregor”talked about my religion, talked about my country, talked to my father”.
Members of Nurmagomedov’s staff were also included in the melee and three of the party were detained but later released.
Half both fighters were given bans since the the Nevada Athletic Commission and his of struggle purse was originally held back researched what happened.
In January, Nurmagomedov had been fined $500,000 (#380,950) and his suspension had been set at fourteen months, meaning he could return to the octagon from 6 July.
Not only was Nurmagomedov encouraged for a meeting with Vladimir Putin after retaining his title, the president dished out some parenting guidance.
As Nevada State Athletic Commission and the UFC weighed what action needs to be taken against the fighter because of his part in the brawl with McGregor’s camp, the father of Nurmagomedov warned he’d be disciplining himself.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov stated after the battle he”will inflict a punishment tougher than the UFC’s”, including:”I cautioned him. For me personally, discipline comes .”
But in a meeting between the trio in October, Putin told Abdulmanap”not to punish him too badly” for his activities.
Putin wasn’t the sole figure needing a piece of Nurmagomedov after his success in vegas.
The fighter had been granted a meeting with the head of the Republic of Dagestan Vladimir Vasilyev, opened an airport at Turkey alongside president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was envisioned with members of the United Arab Emirates royal household and was given a car by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
Fresh from his triumph over McGregor, Nurmagomedov suggested by just taking on boxer Floyd Mayweather, he could emulate his rival.
Mayweather defeat McGregor himself in a struggle that created more than # 450m in August 2017 and got the American 210m.
“When I face Khabib, of course I’m getting a nine-figure money back,” stated the former five-weight world champion.
“More than the McGregor battle. Likely $100m longer – I’m going to say between $110m and $200m (longer ) guaranteed”
The fighter advised Nurmagomedov to”come into my world”, together with the 30-year-old reacting by saying that he was eager for the bout to happen in Moscow
UFC president Dana White subsequently phoned on Mayweather to step in the octagon before talks of a meeting fizzled out.
Nurmagomedov has been making the most of his VIP standing by traveling Europe checking out soccer matches.
The winner was snapped at Paris St-Germain and AC Milan, but his heart stays with local side Anzhi Makhachkala in Dagestan.
“I recall in 2001 I went around Dynamo Stadium twice to somehow go to the scene because I didn’t have cash for a ticket, I truly wanted to cheer up Anji,” he explained.
Finally, he left a friend and has been lent some cash to get within the old floor of the club.
“There were not any seats, I watched for 90 minutes while standing,” he added. “Almost 20 years have passed and much has changed”
Nurmagomedov also has obtained an interest in horse racing, hanging out at stables in Dubai, with the winner of this President of UAE Endurance Cup, Lockelea Starwood Comet.
Oh, and he’s had his head burned into a sheet of wood…
Yes, there is no rest for the wicked and he’s been putting in the hard yards in training while Nurmagomedov could have spent nine of the previous 11 months suspended from the octagon.
The Russian has kept fans current on his progress using routine social media articles of him preparing for his return.
Some significant work from the gym has been complemented by street jogging flipping tyres on the shore and even a trip to see the bear he’d infamously garnish with as a child.
Make no mistake, even if Nurmagomedov arrives at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island to confront Poirier that weekend the defending winner will be in prime condition.
