(CNN) — buying a golf tournament has never been more lucrative.
The Experts’ handbag increased to $11 million in 2017. The Players Championship and the US Open’s winning handbag rocketed to $12.5 million last year. The winner of the FedEx Cup gets an eye-watering $15 million.
Yet at the play of several top players the sport has gotten something of a crisis of confidence lately.
Earlier this season, notably, American Bryson DeChambeau has been criticized by his fellow professionals at the Northern Trust event in New Jersey.
Afterwards, protocols which could see players penalized with penalty strokes to get slow play in the future were announced by the European Tour.
“From our stand point, there were over 1.2 million shots that were hit this season,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan told CNN Sport’s Patrick Snell, talking about potential changes to the game.
“And you have some instances where players are taking an excessive amount of time. Like every thing else in our business, this is something we are always monitoring.”

He continued:”We are not stuck in our ways. We know that gamers are watching the best players on the planet on the LPGA Tour and the PGA Tour, and they mimic their actions.
“And so, if there is a chance for us to make a positive contribution to the game and continue to elevate our merchandise, that’s what we’re going to perform.”
A changing world
With the entire world moving at a place and the growing effect of social media, attention spans are also arguably becoming shorter.
Fans need more action packed with their screening experience and shorter intervals between play.
“When you look at speed of play and you also look at how the world is shifting and also the need that everything happen quicker than it did in the past, it is something we’ve been looking at,” Monahan added.
“We’ve been looking at it since February 2019. We are talking to our gamers council and our players and we are going to use this as an opportunity to improve. It is not about any player.
“It is about our organization placing a system in place that makes it possible for us to improve and finally will help excite those individuals that are going to see and mimic the amazing players on earth, their pre-shot patterns, how they approach the sport.
“However, not everything is going to be ideal and you’ve got to spot the areas it is possible to improve and that is what we’re doing”

‘Inspiring and amazing’
Regardless of the issue of slow play, there have been some narrative lines during this season that have experienced viewers.
By Tiger Woods’ remarkable comeback to win the Masters, to Brooks Koepka switching into the sport superstarit has made for exciting viewing.
And Monahan says golf as a game is in a good location.
“How we consider this new program is we’re at a period of championships, starting in March with all the Players all the way via the Open Championship in July which leads us into the FedEx Cup Playoffs,” Monahan said.
“So, when you look at the champions we have had from that calendar year, from Rory McIlroy into Tiger Woods to Brooks Koepka to Gary Woodland into Shane Lowry, and you also consider the characteristic of these championships, the championships themselves were inspirational and extraordinary.

“And they’ve all grown. Those championships continue to flourish. And what you are seeing as we get into the season of championships and the FedEx Cup Playoffs is eyeballs and much more energy on the game as we continue to attempt to play our roster to increase our game up and move forwards.
“What annually. Consider each of those events I just mentioned and these winners and exactly what they didn’t get there and the excitement around it. You have got to be feeling really good about where we are going.”
